UV Protection For Your Eyes

The primary purpose of sunblock or sunscreen is to protect the skin from the dangerous effects of ultraviolet lights. They consists of ingredients, which provide UV protection at certain levels or ranges of light. However, it is equally important to protect the eyes from the sun's harm. Wearing of sunglasses is an effective way to shield the eyes. Take note that extreme sunlight can burn the conjunctivas and corneas of the eyes. Also, too much sun exposure can also result to eye diseases such as cataracts.

It is strongly suggested that sunglasses with UV protection should be worn always under the sun. They should be able to protect the eyes from both UVA (ultraviolet alpha) and UVB (ultraviolet beta) lights. They have to shield at least 95% of UVA and 99% of UVB. Take note that lenses with no treatment cannot block UV rays.

In choosing sunglasses, don't just opt for the latest style in frames or tint. Always consider its protection side. Here are some features that you take note:

* Polarized lenses – Although they can protect your eyes from the sun's glare, they are not effective UV protection. Their lenses should have to be treated with UV-blocking components.

* Blue-blocking plastic lenses – They are usually endorsed as top sun protection sunglasses. They block many lights like red, amber and blue light. However, this makes difficult to distinguish which light should be blocked. This feature fails most UV protection standards.

* Polycarbonate lenses – They are the best shield against UV radiations. They also protect the eyes from impact injuries especially during sports and games.

* Photochromic lenses – These lenses can shield the eyes from glare and UV light, while maintaining good visual acuity. And, photochromic components don't distort colors.

Remember not to look directly at the sun (even with sunglasses). This can result to permanent eye damage.
