Sunscreen For Babies

If you want to take your little angel out on the beach, or even just in the park, it is very important to provide them with maximum sun protection. There are several sunscreen brands that formulate lotions and oils for babies. Generally, pediatrician encourage parents to apply sun protection lotions on their babies. These products are mostly mild, non-stingy and non-irritation to delicate baby skin.

Take note that you should not apply sunblock on babies below six months old. It is safer if they are protected by clothings. And, it is more advisable that they should be kept out of the sun. However, for babies older than six months old and younger children, sunscreen is good for them. Direct sunlight can burn them easily, and they always get irritated under the sun. In such case, use at least SPF 15 to 30. This will provide enough broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection.

However, the best sunblock for babies should always be hypoallergenic and fragrance-free. They can be a gel, spray or lotion that come in a baby-friendly packaging. They must also be chemical-free or “PABA-free,” which means that they should contain titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. These ingredients are natural minerals, and don't cause irritation or any allergic reactions. They don't actually absorb the harmful lights, but rather they scatter them off.

When you apply sunblock on your baby, be sure to make a patch test first. This will make sure if your baby has any reaction. Apply a little amount on the inner upper arm. If a rash or redness appear within the are, find another sunscreen formula. Remember to apply the sunblock evenly and thickly. Make sure that every part of the body is coated well.
